Danke!

Get to know its unique history

While traveling through Trieste, Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian was so captivated by the beauty of the Adriatic that he decided to build his dream castle here. This residence became his and Queen Charlotte’s retreat—until fate took a dramatic turn. After just four years, Maximilian was tragically executed in Mexico in 1867, leaving behind a love story woven into Miramare’s walls.

Stroll in its lush gardens

Spread across 54 acres, Maximilian’s lush gardens are like a living scrapbook of his travels, filled with exotic plants from around the world. Designed with both Italian and English landscaping styles, these grounds feature daffodils, ponds, and charming gazebos—perfect spots for a quiet stroll or a photo op.

Marvel at the well-preserved interiors

The castle’s interior is remarkably preserved, allowing visitors a glimpse into the lives of its royal residents. Don’t miss the elegant Throne Room or the ‘Maximilian Room,’ styled like a ship’s cabin and complete with the original furnishings that once belonged to the couple.

Take in the incredible views

Maximilian knew how to pick a view! From the castle’s many terraces and colonnades, you’ll have a front-row seat to the Gulf of Trieste, with waves rolling out as far as the eye can see. Stand here and feel as if you’re on the bow of a majestic ship, taking command of the endless blue.

Things to know before booking your Miramare Castle tickets

Torretta

Post restoration, the little tower is once again open to the public during special events and important dates. Located inside is a valuable clock of Viennese make.

The Throne Room

A symbol of regal elegance, this grand hall is filled with rich tapestries, chandeliers, and original furniture. The decor reflects Maximilian’s imperial ambitions and his taste for opulence.

Queen Charlotte’s Apartments

These rooms are filled with intimate details, showcasing Queen Charlotte’s refined tastes and the couple’s affection for each other. You’ll find portraits, keepsakes, and personal belongings that make these rooms feel like a true royal residence.

Greenhouses

There are two greenhouses: old and new. They were originally used for botanical experiments. While the old greenhouses are under renovation, the new one contains the orangery and the upcoming educational room.

Castelletto

While the main castle was still under construction, Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife Queen Charlotte temporarily lived in the Castelletto, which was a miniature version of the castle.

The Duke's Bath

This was the changing booth of Duke Anadeo of Aosta. It offers pleasing views of both the sea and the castle.
