While traveling through Trieste, Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian was so captivated by the beauty of the Adriatic that he decided to build his dream castle here. This residence became his and Queen Charlotte’s retreat—until fate took a dramatic turn. After just four years, Maximilian was tragically executed in Mexico in 1867, leaving behind a love story woven into Miramare’s walls.
Spread across 54 acres, Maximilian’s lush gardens are like a living scrapbook of his travels, filled with exotic plants from around the world. Designed with both Italian and English landscaping styles, these grounds feature daffodils, ponds, and charming gazebos—perfect spots for a quiet stroll or a photo op.
The castle’s interior is remarkably preserved, allowing visitors a glimpse into the lives of its royal residents. Don’t miss the elegant Throne Room or the ‘Maximilian Room,’ styled like a ship’s cabin and complete with the original furnishings that once belonged to the couple.
Maximilian knew how to pick a view! From the castle’s many terraces and colonnades, you’ll have a front-row seat to the Gulf of Trieste, with waves rolling out as far as the eye can see. Stand here and feel as if you’re on the bow of a majestic ship, taking command of the endless blue.
The castle is flanked by 54 acres of lush gardens which are free to enter. Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and Carl Junker, an Austrian architect, transformed the space into a wonderland featuring exotic plants that were not native to Trieste.

Una forma estupenda de ver Trieste en poco tiempo. También me alegré de haber reservado las entradas para el castillo de Miramare con antelación porque la cola para comprarlas era enorme. Quizá deberíais decir a los futuros visitantes del castillo que si tienen las entradas en la mano se salten la cola y vayan directamente a la entrada. En general, me alegro de haberos encontrado en Internet. Volvería a reservar con vosotros.

El autobús se retrasó media hora. El guía no organizó bien la cola de espera, así que la gente se apresuró cuando se acercaba el autobús. ¡Qué desastre! La guía no utilizó el micrófono, por lo que la gente sentada detrás no podía oír lo que decía.

Nada. No es posible subir y bajar. Tiempos de espera demasiado largos. Visita de la ciudad en autobús. Pues bien. No lo volveremos a hacer.
